Small Title
Clinical handover being one of the most pivotal tasks in nursing practice—not only does it contain vital information about the patients but also represent the transfer of responsibility and accountability in patient care. Dr Jack Pun, Assistant Professor at CityU’s Department of English recently conducted a training on effective handover with 40 Hong Kong nurses.
In this event, Dr Pun presented the two commonly adopted, standardised handover protocols, namely, the ISBAR (Identify, Situation, Background, Assessment & Actions and Recommendations & Readback) protocol which focuses on the informative dimension of handover, and the CARE-Team (Connect, Ask, Readback, and Engage) framework that promotes nurses’ interaction. Particularly, Dr Pun has highlighted the elements of “Readback” and “Engage”; he encouraged local nurses to actively seek for clarification via closed loop communication to ensure both the outgoing and incoming parties understand what the tasks are and hence provide quality patient care. In addition, a series of role-play simulations were carried out to let the participants learn through real-life scenarios in an interactive way.
In one ongoing project entitled “Building Effective Nursing Clinical Handover Communication: Improving Patient Safety”, Dr Pun as the principal investigator has been working closely with the major parties in nursing to develop the training materials to uplift local nurses’ clinical handover and communication skills. Funded by PASS, the goal is to have invited 600 nurses in Hong Kong to participate in this 4-hour training programme between December 2021 and May 2022. Interested nursing professionals are highly encouraged to check this project out and express interests for participation via the website. By delivering the training programmes, Dr Pun aims and hopes to enhance the effectiveness of clinical handover among nurses and, ultimately, to further improve patient care and patient safety in Hong Kong.

16 December, 2021 | Nursing Clinical Handover: Trial Class
The first nurse training class has been successfully held on 16th December 2021. In this workshop, Dr. Jack Pun and Dr. Angela Chan introduced the handover protocols and communication skills to 14 frontline nurses from United Christian Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital and they participated in role-play session as well to utilize the skills learnt in different scenarios.

Dr. Pun explained ISBAR and CARE protocol in the workshop and thus participants could complete handover by following the structures and increase the interaction and clarification among nurses. It was also emphasized that application of protocols in handover could help prevent adverse effects on patients caused by misunderstanding. Different examples were shown for participants to analyze and make suggestions to improve by referring to ISBAR and evaluate the effectiveness of handover.
Moreover, the role play session in the second half of the workshop provided an opportunity for participants to consolidate and apply the protocols into three different scenarios. Feedback was also provided by the facilitators after role play for improvements in the future.
